Biography

Anthony Shih, MD, MPH, was appointed President and CEO of United Hospital Fund (UHF) in August 2017.  Established in 1879, UHF is an independent non-profit organization whose mission is to build a more effective health care system for every New Yorker through rigorous research and policy analysis, convening of diverse stakeholders, and developing and supporting innovative programs that improve the quality, accessibility, affordability, and experience of patient care.

Dr. Shih is a seasoned non-profit professional who is nationally recognized for his expertise in health policy, health system performance improvement, quality improvement, and population health, as well as for his commitment to serving vulnerable populations.  He has held senior executive positions at influential non-profits working on state and national health policy issues, including executive vice president at the New York Academy of Medicine, a leading voice in urban health since 1847; and executive vice president for programs at the Commonwealth Fund, a national philanthropy working to improve the U.S. healthcare system since 1918.  Previously, he served as vice president of strategy and chief quality officer for IPRO, one of the nation’s largest non-profit health care quality improvement organizations. He began his medical career at a community-based mental health clinic serving immigrant and refugee families in Oakland, CA.

Dr. Shih is board-certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health.  He earned a B.A. in economics from Amherst College (Phi Beta Kappa); an M.D. from the NYU School of Medicine (Alpha Omega Alpha); and an M.P.H. from Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.
