Biography

Dr. OiYan Poon is an assistant professor of Higher Education Leadership in the School of Education at Colorado State University. She is an award-winning and nationally recognized expert on racial politics and discourses of college access, affirmative action, and Asian Americans. Dr. Poon has also served as an admissions reader in the University of California and a scholarship reader for the Bill & Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship Program. Prior to joining the faculty at CSU, Dr. Poon was an assistant professor of Higher Education at Loyola University Chicago. She has also held a research associate position in the Institute for Asian American Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Boston and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of American Cultures at UCLA. After earning her B.S. in management at Boston College and M.Ed. in college student affairs administration at the University of Georgia, OiYan worked in multicultural student affairs. She was the first Asian Pacific American Student Affairs director at George Mason University and the first Student Affairs Officer in Asian American Studies at UC Davis. After working for several years in college administration, she completed her Ph.D. in race and ethnic studies in education with a certificate in Asian American studies from UCLA.
